Length and Breadth (2004, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Stripes are an eternal pattern that has existed since ancient times.
When combined vertically and horizontally, a different world emerges.
I have been involved with patterns for more than 40 years,
but I find real pleasure in creating somthing memorable
using motifs that are everywhere and ordinary.
English translation by Karen Yiu

Staggered Stripes (2004, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
The lines are drawn by hand, without using a ruler.
Each line is staggered, but they look neat as a whole.
I think it is a simple, universal design and
with my own personality.
English translation by Karen Yiu

Marbles (2004, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Interval and rhythm.
These are the most important things I value when designing.
Rhythm is created by taking space.
I think the "ohajiki"(marbles) expresses this feeling well.
The circles seem to be arranged regularly and neatly,
but they are not, and I think you can feel an indescribable rhythm.
English translation by Karen Yiu

Circles (2004, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
This is a pattern I made casually,
when I was asked to make a design with circles that lined up.
It is not always good to make something that was made in desperate efforts,
and sometimes I think it is more interesting to make things lightly and casually.
English translation by Karen Yiu

Knitting Pattern (2004, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
In my childhood,
women used to do a lot of knitting.
They took thick wooden knitting needles,
rolling the wool yarn balls and
knitted with every single stitch.
Quiet time passed around the person
who was knitting without thinking.
I wonder if people nowadays
have such a time to do so.
English translation by Karen Yiu

Leafy Shade (2004, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
When I walked into the shade of large trees in the fresh green season,
the leaves were overlapping each other
and the sun is shinning brightly through the trees.
The overlapping leaves drew a leafy shade on my feet.
I depicted this feeling in an image of simple leaves.
English translation by Karen Yiu

"Shigure / Light rainfall"(2004,by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Japan is surrounded by beautiful nature and Japanese have a lot of unique words to express nature.
Among them, many are about weather.
Names of rain vary in seasons, time of day and tendency.
Shigure means rain which starts and stops frequently in late fall and early winter.
These untranslatable words reflect the delicate sensibility of Japanese.
English translation by LI XIAO XIAO

"KIKU / Chrysanthemum"(2004,by Katsuji Wakisaka)
During my stay in Paris, I began to be conscious of the unique charm of Japanese-style things.
After my return back to Japan, I put my heart into designing with the motif of chrysanthemum inspired by wagashi.
Since I’m trying to emphasize Japanese characteristics,
I regard construction as more important than harmony.
And in this KIKU (Chrysanthemum), I used the black cloud to give a sensation of tension.
