“琥珀羹 平成26年”
表面はザラリとしていてパリッと固く
中はやわらかくかんだ時の
口あたりが独特。
さっぱりした上品な甘味が
口の中にひろがる琥珀羹。
京都の和菓子の世界は奥が深い。
京都生まれの僕も
今でも全く知らなかったお菓子に出会う。
それが歴史があり
個性的な味わい深いものなので
驚かされる。

Kohakutou Candy (2014, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
The surface is rough, crispy and hard.
The texture inside is soft and
has a unique mouth feel when chewed.
Kohakutou amber candy has a light,
elegant sweetness that spreads in the mouth.
The world of Kyoto's wagashi is really deep.
Even now, as a Kyoto native,
I still encounter sweets that I had no idea about.
I am surprised to find that
they have a long history and
are unique and rich in nuance.

直径1cmぐらいの丸い玉を
地面にたたきつける。
バンッという音とともに
玉が破裂する。
とても単純な遊びだが
かんしゃく玉を投げあって遊ぶのは
楽しかった。

Slammed the round ball
which is around 1cm in diameter on the ground.
The ball bursts with a bang.
It is a very simple game,
but it was fun to throw them at each other.

ひつじといえば
くるくる巻いた毛と
くるりとした角が思い浮かぶ。
その2つを組み合わせて
未年の手ぬぐいにした。
災害の多い年が続いていますが
未年はおだやかな年であります様に。

When I think of goat,
curly hair and curly horns
come to my mind.
I combined these two characteristics
to make a tenugui for the year of the goat.
Despite the many disasters
that have occurred in recent years,
I hope that the year of the goat
will be a peaceful year.

じぐざぐに折れ曲った線と線が交差する。
火花を散らすように
はげしくぶつかり合う。
鋭角的な線は人の心を不安にし
落ち着かない気持にさせる。
しかし一方で先鋭的な面白さがある。

They collide with each other furiously, as if sparking.

the squares became the birds.

桃山の人々の自由奔放な生き方から
生まれたのだろう。

Momoyama Era (2014, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
The Azuchi-momoyama era, an beautiful era which has never been seen before,
was created under the baton of Nobunaga and Hideyoshi.
Tsujigahana dyeing technique which was born and died out in this era,
has became a remarkable craft.
I think this generous and gentle beauty
must be the result of the freewheeling lifestyle
of the people of Momoyama era.

L’Ère Momoyama, marquée par une beauté inégalée jamais vue jusque là, sous la baguette de Nobunaga et Hideyoshi.
Née durant cette période, la technique de teinture Tsujigahana devient un artisanat fantaisiste.

“紗綾形 平成26年”
一見迷路のようだが
昔からあるもので卍形を模様にしたもの。
着物の地紋や模様の背景に使われ親しまれてきた。
大岡越前のお裁きの場の襖絵として
見たことのある人も多いと思う。
とても単純な模様をくりかえしている
だけなのに大胆で美しい。
テキスタイルデザインのお手本のような模様だ。

Sayagata (2014, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
It looks like a maze at a glance,
but is a traditional pattern that uses connected 卍 patterns.
Sayagata was familiar as woven pattern of Kimono,
or background of other patterns.
It is also well known as a painting on a fusuma
of the judgement room of Echizen Ōoka,
a Japanese samurai in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Although it is a repetition of very simple patterns,
it is daring and beautiful.
I think Sayagata is like a model of textile design.

A première vu, cela ressemble à un labyrinthe mais
il s’agit d’un motif très ancien dérivé de la svastika.
Il est très connu, souvent utilisé pour les motifs de kimonos.
Beaucoup de personnes l’ont déjà vu sur les motifs
de fusuma lors des jugements du célèbre Echizen Ōoka.
Le simple fait de répéter plusieurs fois ce motif si simple
lui confère un caractère particulier et une beauté unique.
On peut le considérer comme un motif de base pour les textiles.

紗綾形乍看之下像迷宮，
是常用在和服底紋中的圖案。
時代劇大岡越前中著名場景的隔扇畫，
也是紗綾形。
只是單純重複的紋樣，
卻有一種大膽的美。
可以說，紗綾形是織物設計的範本紋樣。

“花絣 平成26年”
絣は模様の端がキザギザになって表現される。
大正時代の着物には大柄な花や模様を絣で
表現したものが流行していた。
その大胆さと絣の味わいが
一体となって面白さをかもし出していた。
この花絣はプリントだが絣の面白さを表現。

Kasuri patterns are characterized by a blurred or brushed appearance.
Kasuri textile kimono became in fashion in the Taisho period.
Flower patterned kasuri fabric has somewhat adventurous and such profound feature.
I tried to depict the unique beauty of kasuri in this textile.

"Ikat floral"(2014, par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Les bords des ikats japonais sont dentelés.
A l’époque de l’ère Taishō, les kimonos en ikats
japonais et à grands motifs floraux étaient en vogue.
Cette audace et la saveur particulière des ikats
ne faisaient plus qu’un, cocasses et divertissantes.
Cet ikat floral est un imprimé mais il reflète bien cette gaité.

おそろしい音が鳴りひびく。
ピカッと稲妻が走る。
真白な雷光が空を切り裂いて
地上に突きささる。
神社でお祓いをするための御幣は
稲妻をかたどったという説もあるようだ。

Boom, Clap, Crash,
Terrifying sound shout.
Suddenly, a thin jagged line,
Of blinding light,
Cuts through the sky,
Strike into the ground.
It is said that the shide, or a zigzag-shaped paper streamer often used to adorn
a Shinto shrine is inspired by the lightening.

Un bruit terrifiant retentit.
Un éclair traverse le firmament.
Une lumière blanche découpe le ciel
pour finir sa course sur terre.
Il existe une théorie selon laquelle les feuilles du gohei,
offrande faite aux sanctuaires, représenteraient des éclairs.

“雲間と鳥獣戯画 平成26年”
日本最古の漫画とも称される鳥獣戯画。
SOU・SOUのデザイン“雲間がくれ”の世界で遊ぶ、さる、うさぎ、カエル。
900年も前の絵が現代のものと違和感なくひとつの世界を形づくっている。
これぞまさしく時代を超えて生き続ける古典の力だろう。

"Choju-giga between the clouds"（2014,by Katsuji Wakisaka）
Choju-giga or the wildlife cartoon, is said that the oldest 'manga' in the sense of comical pictures in Japan.
Between the clouds is an original textile design of SOU・SOU.
Animals in the manga, swimming between the clouds.
900-year-old manga and modern pop textile match well miraculously.
This is what we called the power of the classic and tradition.

"Entre les nuages et le Chōjū-giga"(2014, par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Le Chōjū-giga (« caricatures d’animaux »), connu pour être le manga le plus vieux du Japon.
Un singe, un lapin et une grenouille s’amusant dans le monde du design « entre les nuages » de SOU・SOU.
Les dessins vieux de plus de 900 ans et d’autres plus contemporains se retrouvent de façon très
naturelle dans un seul et même monde.
Voilà donc la puissance des classiques qui dépassent les époques.

枝いっぱいに 実らせる
見ていると
りんごを かんだ時の
かりっとした歯ごたえ
甘さと 酸っぱさが
口いっぱいに ひろがってくる

Apple field, blossom in light pink and white in spring,

Au printemps, un rose clair
et des fleurs blanches fleurissent.
Puis, de l’automne à l’hiver,
des pommes écarlates
poussent abondamment sur les branches.
Quand on y croque à pleines dents,
sa texture ferme, sa douceur et son acidité
se répandent dans notre bouche.

“菜の花 平成26年”
菜とは食用の意味で菜の花とは食用の花。
まだ寒い時期から黄色い花を咲かせた
菜の花が野菜売場に並ぶ。
その明るい黄色と少し苦味のある味が
食卓に春を運んでくる。

"Nanohana"（2014,by Katsuji Wakisaka）
"Na" of nanohana in Japanese implies "edible"
and "nanohana" means briefly "edible flower".
From the season it is still cold
nanohana (canola flower) with blooming little yellow flowers,
show up in vegetable stores.
The brightness of its yellow and little bit bitter taste
bring spring to our dinning table.

“大根かぶら 平成26年”
大根は一年中あるが、おいしいのは冬。
寒い日のおでんの大根は何とも言えない。
かぶらむしも体が暖まる冬の醍醐味のひとつ。
京漬物の代表千枚漬は聖護院大根。
こう考えると冬の食に大根とかぶらは欠かせない。

"Daikon kabura / Winter root vegetables"（2014,by Katsuji Wakisaka）
Daikon, Japanese white radish, is the most delicious in winter.
It’s indescribable to have a piece of nicely cooked daikon in oden on such a cold day.
Kabura-mushi, a steamed turnip dish, is warming up my body.
That's one of the best part of winter.
Senmaiduke, most famous of Japanese pickles from Kyoto, is made of shogoin-daikon, a round Japanese radish.
Come to think of it, daikon and kabura are essential relish for winter dishes.

"Daikon & Kabura / Radis blanc & Navet"(2014, par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Le daikon, appelé radis blanc ou radis chinois en France, est le plus délicieux des légumes d'hiver. Le plaisir de manger un morceau de radis blanc à la façon oden par un jour d'hiver aussi froid est indescriptible.
Le Kabura-mushi, navet cuit à la vapeur, vous réchauffe le corps. C'est un des meilleurs moments de l'hiver.
Les Senmaizuke, légumes conservés dans du vinaigre les plus connus de Kyoto, sont faits à partir de shogoin-daikon, un radis blanc et rond japonais.
En y réfléchissant bien, le radis blanc et le navet sont des ingrédients essentiels à la cuisine hivernale japonaise.

“大雪 平成26年”
山の峰が雪におおわれ
平地も北風が吹き
いよいよこれから冬将軍到来の季節。
今年はどんな冬になるのだろうか。
しかし冬は寒く夏は暑いのがいい。
雪が降って暗く寒い冬には
冬独特の情緒や楽しみがある。
そして春を迎える喜びもわく。
四季それぞれ変化のあることが
生きていくことをどれほど豊かに
してくれることか。

Caps of snow standing on the peaks,
The north wind is whistling through the ground.
Severe winter is coming.
I wonder how cold this winter will be.
However, it's a mercy that hot in summer and cold in winter.
Grey skies, dark evenings and bitter cold weather are also counts as charm of the winter.
Being tolerant of this, we are long for spring.
Feeling and enjoying the change of the seasons makes our lives picturesque.

Les sommets des montagnes recouverts de neige, Le vent du Nord souffle dans les plaines, Annonçant la venue imminente du rude hiver. Je me demande à quel point cet hiver sera difficile. ようやく夏の暑さもおとろえてきて
朝夕はしのぎやすくなってくる。
空の色も秋らしく空気も澄んでくる。
台風も来るが、何より月が美しく仲秋の名月もこのころ。

残暑が厳しく一年で一番暑い季節。
早く秋が来ないかなぁと思うころ。
しかし風のそよぎや雲の形に何とはなしに
秋の気配がただよいはじめるころでもある。
