As the New Year's events slow down in mid January, Hatsugama, the first tea ceremony of the year, is held. Across from where I live, there is a Japanese-style restaurant that has been around for 400 years.
Every morning I pass by the place when I go for a walk and at that time of the year, Hatsugama's Cha-kaiseki, light meal served in the tea ceremony, is being prepared from early in the morning, pouring out fine aroma of dashi to the streets. Today, tea ceremony seems like a distant world yet in Kyoto it is alive in daily life.

January's Seasonal Confection of Kyoto is made of smooth koshi-an (strained sweetened bean paste) with black sugar from Hateruma-jima, the southern-most point of Japan.
Black beans from Tanba area and gold dust is placed on top for the New Year's design.

We serve a cup of green matcha tea (or choice of coffee) and our wagashi based on our textile design.
