January's textile designFûjin & Raijin /
Wind & Thunder Gods

The iconography of Fûjin-Raijin has been seen in Buddhist art since ancient time. Fûjin, the god of wind, was portrayed on coins of Kushan Empire during 1st~3rd centuries. Both of them can be found on mural paintings in the Dunhuang caves, or in the Sanjusangendô temple in Kyoto. However, I believe the most famous representation of them to be on the folding screens created by Tawaraya Sôtatsu. He is the greatest Japanese painter, whom I respect the most, a Human National Treasure.

About January's wagashi

Fûjin is the god of wind and Raijin is the god of thunder and lightning. This month's wagashi - traditional sweet confections - are in the shapes of Fûjin's billowing cloud and Raijin's lightning arrow. Fûjin's cloud is a guimauve, or a marshmallow (gelatin, egg whites), mixed with sake-kasu (sake lees). Inside the treat has been stuffed with a white bean paste flavored with an o-toso sake, which is traditionally consumed on new year's day with family members, to celebrate the new year and bring in the good fortune.

Raijin's lightning arrow is a type of yuzu-kan; it contains fresh yuzu, yuzu skin, yuzu juice, yuzu jam, and dried yuzu peels. The candy toppings will pop in your mouth just like lightning itself.
