“重ね菱 平成24年”
日本の家紋は
ビシッと決っていてクール。
菱形を3つ重ねて家紋のようにし
それを並べて模様にした。
これだけで江戸時代のさむらいの
ふんいきがただよってくるようだ。
武田信玄の家紋も菱形で構成されている。

Overlapping Rhombuses (2012, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Japanese family crests are
cool and decisive.
Three rhombuses are stacked on top of
each other to form a shape like a family crest.
This simple shape gives a touch of
the samurai of Edo preiod.
The family crest of Takeda Shingen
also formed by Rhombuses.

Pile de losanges (2012 par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Les sceaux familiaux japonais
sont très cools et très stylés.
J’ai empilé trois losanges
que j’ai arrangé comme un sceau familial
pour arriver à ce design.
Par ce procédé, on a l’impression de
retrouver l’atmosphère des samourais.
Le sceau familial du célèbre Shingen Takeda
a aussi la forme de losanges.

Year of the Horse (2013
, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
In the past, horses that were used as carriages for the gods,
were delictaed as sacred horses to gods .
From a certain period of time, people started to dedicate board paintings
with pictures of horses on them, as a substitute.
In honour of the year of the horse,
I am delighted to dedicate the ema to gods.

Il y a longtemps, j’ai fait une offrande à
un cheval sacré, attelage des dieux.
Et, depuis ce temps-là, je me recueille devant
une icône représentant un cheval peint.

The sky is cold, clear and
shining blue.
Stars that twinkling in the beautiful sky,
make the coldness stand out.
Night after night, the tale of the sky unfolds,
which is a delight of the winter season.

“未 平成26年”
ひつじといえば
くるくる巻いた毛と
くるりとした角が思い浮かぶ。
その2つを組み合わせて
未年の手ぬぐいにした。
災害の多い年が続いていますが
未年はおだやかな年であります様に。

When I think of goat,
curly hair and curly horns
come to my mind.
I combined these two characteristics
to make a tenugui for the year of the goat.
Despite the many disasters
that have occurred in recent years,
I hope that the year of the goat
will be a peaceful year.

“ぽんぽんダリア 平成25年”
花弁がびっしりつまっていて
まりのようにコロコロした
ぽんぽんダリア。
丸い形と鮮やかな色が愛らしく
女性が好きな花のひとつ。
昔、僕はこういうびっしりつまった
模様を描くのが好きだった。
そのころの一枚が長い年月を経て
再び発表されることになった。

Pompon dahlia,
a ball-like roly-poly flower
which petals are tightly packed.
The round shape and bright colors
make it one of women's favourite flowers.
I used to like to draw these densely packed patterns.
This is one of those from the old days
and is published again after a long time.

じぐざぐに折れ曲った線と線が交差する。
火花を散らすように
はげしくぶつかり合う。
鋭角的な線は人の心を不安にし
落ち着かない気持にさせる。
しかし一方で先鋭的な面白さがある。

Zigzag lines bent, turn and intersect.
They collide with each other furiously, as if sparking.
Sharp-edged lines make people feel uncertain and restless.

海が激しく うねっている
うねりの頂点で 波が真白になり
波頭がくだけおちる そして又
波が立ちあがり 波頭があらわれ
くだけおちる
くりかえし くりかえされる 自然の営みは
いつまで見ていてもあきないし美しい

The sea is swollen violently.
At the top of the swell, the waves crests turn white and
the wave caps crash down.
And then the waves rise again, and the wave caps emerge and fall.
Repeat and being repeated.
The workings of nature
are endlessly fascinating and beautiful to behold.

The leaves have fallen from their thriving foliage
and the bare groves are revealed.
The wintry wind blows and the trees look cold.
But if you look closely, you can see that
new buds have sprouted vigorously and firmly.

the squares became the birds.

葉の形を描く
縦と横の線だけなので
自由に描く時と違って制約がある
それがシンプルですっきりした
花柄を誕生させた

Draw the shape of flowers with thin lines
and depict the shape of leaves.
Because there are only vertical and horizontal lines,
so there are limitations unlike when drawing freely.
This gave birth to a simple and clean floral pattern.

Open fields have become less and less common recently.
When the grass grows in the fields
and the whole area is covered with green,
different types of flower begin to bloom.
I don't even know the name of the wild flowers,
but they have a simplicity that is untouched by human hands,
and make me feel familiar with them.
The nostalgic scenery of Japan
can be found in a field.

blooming amongst the densely grown green vegetation.
It is refreshing to see them
come into blossom quietly and inconspicuously.

the feelings of the Japanese people.

De petits chrysanthèmes de couleurs blanches et violettes
fleurissent parmi la luxuriante végétation.
C’est tellement réjouissant de les voir s’épanouir
si calmement et discrètement.
Ces petits chrysanthèmes qui poussent dans les champs
ne seraient-elles pas les fleurs qui accompagnent avec douceur
les sentiments du peuple japonais?
