この柄は2つの色が
重なり合って出来ている
どんな風に見えるか想像できず
たまたま こうなったという要素が大きい

Accidentally.
This pattern was created by overlapping two colors
without being able to imagine how it might look like.
The element of "by coincidence" is key.
Even in life,
there are many things that happened by chance
and that's probably a good thing.

Je ne pouvais pas imaginer à quoi il ressemblerait.
Le hasard est quelque chose d'important.

白いクレパスを一面ぬって
その上に模様を描く
クレパスが色をはじくので
微妙な味わいが出る
陶板を並べたようなふんいきが
楽しい一点となる

Ceramic Plates (2019, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
I colored a drawing paper with white crayons
and drew a pattern on it.
Since the crayon repels other colors,
it brings out subtle flavor of the work.
This interesting pattern created an atmosphere
that looked like laying out ceramic plates.

Je dessine un motif.
Comme le pastel repousse la couleur,
Le rendu est étrange.

“四君子 令和元年”
古来 中国で君子とは
徳と学識、礼儀を備えた
人を指してきた。
蘭、竹、菊、梅の４つの植物の
特徴が君子の特性と
似ていることから
文人画の代表的な素材となった。
その４つの植物を
シンプルなシルエットで表現し
すっきりと仕上げた。

Four Junzi (Shikunshi) (2019, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
In China, knowledgeable people of virtue and courtesy
are called "Junzi"(Kunshi) since ancient times,
which means noble people.
As the characteristics of orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum and plum
are similar to the personality of Junzi,
they became the representative plants
for paintings of literary artists.
I created this pattern by using simple silhouettes
of these four plants and
finished in a clear-cut manner.

Quatre Nobles Plantes(2019, par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Autrefois en Chine, le terme « Junzi »,
« homme noble », désigner les personnes
vertueuses, érudites et courtoise.
Illustrant à merveille les qualités de ces gentilshommes,
L’orchidée, le bambou, le chrysanthème et la prune
devinrent les plantes représentatives dans les peintures de lettrés.
J’ai simplifié ces quatre plantes pour créer un design épuré.

古代中國所謂「君子」
指德才兼備的人
又因蘭、竹、菊、梅之特性與「君子」相似
於是這四種植物成爲了文人畫的代表主題
我將植物四君子的輪廓簡化

The gentle giants have long trunks and tender eyes.
They walk leisurely, have something of the powerful samurai.
In order to live through on the wide spread of prairie,

“珊瑚礁 令和元年”
沖縄などの暖かい海にひろがる
珊瑚礁。
青い海の中に思いがけない
色鮮やかな世界が。
珊瑚を中心に 花のような形のもの。
ゆらゆらと ゆれ動いているもの。
その間を 大小さまざまな魚が
泳ぎまわっている。
砂地には エビやカニなど
動きまわっていて
豊かな生命の循環が見られる。

Coral reefs adorn the tropical seas, such as Okinawa area,
providing dazzling colors in the blue ocean.
Coral reef is a circle of life:
flower-shaped coral blooming,
while some branches swaying in the weaves;
fishes swimming through,
while crabs and shrimps enjoy themselves in sandy soil.

Des récifs coralliens colorent le bleu des mers tropiacales,
comme à Okinawa par exemple.
Un récif corallien est un cercle de vie:
des coraux floraux en pleine floraison,
tandis que d’autres tissent leurs branches,
dans lesquelles nagent les poissons,
pendant que les crabes et les crevettes profitent du sol sablonneux.

especially their behavior.
Cats are lithe,
every moving is so picturesque.
Cats are mystical,
wild by nature and fancy‐free in style.

森の樹の上で
じっとたたずみ 獲物をねらう
ふくろうの姿は
生きる厳しさを感じさせる。
その反面 どこか愛嬌があり
人気がある。
不苦労や福老に通じるので
縁起物でもある。

Owl (2019, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Standing still on the forest tree, waiting for its prey,
Owl shows sublime of life, while cute and charming in apperance.
In Japan, owls bring luck and offer protection from suffering.
The reason can be found in the Japanese name for owl, fu-ku-ro,
which can be written in different sets of characters:
fu for no, kuro for hardship; or fuku for luck, and ro for elderly.

Immobile sur les cimes de la fôret,
attendant patiemment sa proie
le hibou fait force de vitalité et de prestance,
tant aimé chez les Japonais.
Il apporte chance et protection, pouvant être
également interprété phonétiquement par
« Aisance » ou « Chance pour les anciens ».

貓頭鷹(2019, 胁阪 克二)
靜謐佇立在森林某棵樹上
耐心等候獵物出現的貓頭鷹，
讓人感受到生命的威嚴。
與個性相反，它的外觀充滿親和力，招人喜愛。
在日語中，貓頭鷹的發音也可寫作“不苦勞”或“福老”，
寓意祥和，象徵福氣。

一度こうなってしまったら
なかなか 元には戻せない
あせれば あせる程
からみつく
あきらめて いっそこのままで
いいかと思うと
気持が落ち着き
今まで見えなかった
からみの美しさが見えてくる

Threads twist, strongly tangled together.
People try to disentangle them but
the more we force, the more they get entangled.
Once you give up, and take an objective view,
you may realize the beauty and harmony of this entanglement.

Les fils s’entortillent pour former une véritable tornade.
Une fois dans cet état, il est presque impossible de les démêler.
Plus on force, plus ils s’enchevêtrent.
Une fois qu’on abandonne en se disant que ça ne sert à rien,
on se clame et on s’aperçoit de la beauté de ce chaos jusqu’alors invisible.

“雪持柳に椿 令和元年”
柳の枝に降りつもった雪を
中心に椿を組み合せた
冬の模様。
昔の人がいかに自然と一体となって
暮らしていたかがしのばれる。
日本人が持っている
季節に対する愛着が
こういう模様を生み出して
きたのだろう。

Snow covered weeping willow,
Camellia flower blooms in the middle.
This is a traditional kimono pattern of winter.
It reminds me of the Japanese' keen sense of the season.
People on this island has been learnt to live in harmony with nature long ago,
The pattern shows their sensitivity and imagination.

Il rappelle la vie des anciens qui ne

Characters in "The Tale of Genji" are described in illustrated handscrolls, art shikishi boards, folding screens and fans.
Patterns of their splendid costumes increase elegance and tastefulness.
I gathered those textile designs to create my Genji pattern.

唐織。
伝統的で格式があり
絢爛豪華さにおいて
世界の舞台衣装の中でも

金糸、銀糸を始め色鮮やかな
糸を使って 草花や文様を
織り出しています。

Gorgeous Kara-ori(2019, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Kara-ori is a gorgeous costume of the female role in a noh drama.
With a magnificent splendor, Kara-ori is described as
the best grades of stage costume in the world.
It is characterized by grass and flowers pattern
that kintted with brightly colored yarn, such as gold thread and silver thread. .

Le Kara-ori est un magnifique costume pour le rôle des femmes dans le théâtre Nō.
De haute facture, il est décrit comme le plus beau de tous les costumes de théâtre au monde.
Ses caractéristiques sont des motifs de plantes et de fleurs cousus de fils colorés, tel que des fils d’or ou d’argent.

澄みわたった夜空に浮かぶ

朝夕は気持よい季節になって
虫の音が聞こえるようになる
菊の花も咲きはじめ
これから秋本番となる

Autumn moon hanging on the autumn clear night sky.
It might be the climax of the autumn days.
As the summer heat goes down,
Days and nights have cooled down.
Autumn comes,
as the chirping of insects starts to be heard,
and the chrysanthemum bursts.

La joie des nuits d’automne réside surement
dans la lune qui flotte dans le ciel clair d’automne.
Au fur et à mesure que la chaleur estivale diminue,
les jours et nuits deviennent de plus en plus agréables.
L’automne arrive enfin à nous,
aux chants des insectes de plus en plus audibles
et aux couleurs des chrysanthèmes qui fleurissent.

“ひさご 令和元年”
ひさごとは瓢箪のことで
うり科の植物の中身をくりぬき
乾燥させて作られる
酒や水 七味唐辛子の容器
として使用されてきた
縁起物として 掛け軸や器
染物の意匠として愛されてきた
これも能衣裳の模様
武将が旗印や馬印としても
用いられてきた

Hisago(2019, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Hisago or gourd, is commonly hollowed and dried to use as
a sake or water container, as well as a seasoning holder.
As it's supposed to bring luck in Japan,
You can also find gourd pattern on hanging scrolls, tableware,
and traditional textile design as a decorative motif.
My hisago design is origined from gourd pattern printed on
costume for Noh stage, and banner or flag of famous samurai warriors.

Hisago fait référence à la calebasse,
de la famille des cucurbitacées,
dont la chair est extraite et séchée.
Elle est également utilisée comme récipient
pour le saké, l’eau ou bien le Shichimi.
Particulièrement appréciée pour la conception
d’amulettes, de rouleaux suspendus, de récipients
ou encore pour le tissage, elle fut aussi utilisé
comme bannière par des shoguns.

葫蘆(2019, 胁阪 克二)
瓜類植物葫蘆，挖空曬乾，
常用作裝酒水、辣椒粉等調味料的容器。
葫蘆寓意「福祿」，自古多用於各種畫卷、器物和服飾紋樣中。
作爲染印織品紋樣的葫蘆，
常見於日本傳統「能劇」的舞臺服裝、武將的旗幟花紋和馬印（將領大旗）的圖形中。

Refreshing pattern(2019, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Japanese put a lot of thought into the pattern design of kimono.
Rolling clouds, flowing water and various refreshing flowers for seasons are designed for the hot and humid summer in Japan.
I got my inspiration from those old linen kimono designs to create this pattern.
