Kurume Kasuri is a weaving technique that originated in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture in the late Edo period. Only skilled craftsmen with sophisticated skills can produce Kurume Kasuri, which requires meticulous calculations and a great deal of labour. Because of the high level of skill required, it has been designated as an important intangible cultural asset and a traditional craft.
