The “WAKISAKA KATSUJI / SOU・SOU MUSEUM” showcases approximately 60 years of works by SOU・SOU textile designer Katsuji Wakisaka (81). Located in a renovated traditional Japanese house near Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, the museum features his textile designs and original drawings from his Marimekko period to his current SOU・SOU period, offering a glimpse into his creative journey and evolving design style.
The museum’s general opening date has yet to be decided. A limited-time preview event is planned during Silver Week, with details to be announced on the official SOU・SOU website.
Born in Kyoto in 1944. In 1968, he became a textile designer for the Finnish apparel company Marimekko. After working with Jack Larsen and Wacoal, he joined SOU・SOU as a textile designer in 2002. Based in Kyoto, he continues to create textile designs for SOU・SOU to this day.
This museum houses a collection of works by Katsuhisa Wakisaka. It features a wide range of his creations from 1968 to the present, showcasing works from each period of his career.
Throughout his career as a textile designer, which began in his twenties, he went through the Marimekko period, the Jack Larsen period, and the Wacoal period, followed by a short period of working independently as an artist. In 2002, he met me and architect Hisanobu Tsujimura, which led to the birth of his current SOU・SOU period.
We hope visitors will enjoy discovering the differences in design styles created across different countries and companies during each period, as well as the evolving sense of “taste” and character that has developed with age and experience. We believe this journey through his work will be a fascinating experience.
