“花がさね 平成20年”
四十年以上、テキスタイルデザインをやってきて、
いつの時代にもどこの国でも花柄は人気があったので
花のデザインはいっぱい作ってきた。
それではもう描く花がないかというとそうでもない。
花を重ね合わせるというアイディアでやってみると又、
いままでとは違った雰囲気が出てくるから不思議だ。

I have been working on textile design for over 40 years.
Flower is a popular pattern the world over regardless of time.
I keep painting flowers and surprisingly,
I can still find something new about flowers design.
This time I layer some flowers to provide a fresh atmosphere.

Je réalise des designs depuis plus de 40 ans.
Peu importe l’époque ou le pays, les motifs floraux,
dont je me suis fait spécialiste, ont toujours du succès.
De là à dire que je les ai toutes dessiné? Pas du tout.
Dans l’idée de mélanger différentes fleurs, j’ai réalisé
un nouveau motif jamais créé jusqu’à présent.

能を見ていると、背筋がピッと伸びた
凛とした美しさにゾクゾクしてくる。
その能衣裳の一部分から
インスピレーションをうけて作った、
シンプルだけれど緊張感のある模様。

Have you seen the Noh dance?
You may feel a sense of tension from its stately beauty.
The inspiration of this pattern comes from costume of Noh dance,
Simple, but has a tremendous impact.

“紙吹雪 平成20年”
ニューヨークの街を優勝パレードが通り、
ビルの上から小さく切った新聞紙が
吹雪の様にばらまかれる。
芝居の舞台では演じる人の上に紙の雪が舞い落ちる。
紙吹雪が舞うと、華やかさや情緒が湧き上がってくる。

"Ticker tape"（2008,by Katsuji Wakisaka）
Ticker-tape parade was held in New York City.
Large amounts of shredded paper is thrown from nearby office buildings, creating a celebratory effect by the snowstorm-like flurry.
Rain of confetti can also be seen on the Japanses stage paly,
Making glamorous air as theatrical art.

Une parade défile dans les rues de New York,
Des journaux coupés en confettis et jetés du haut des buildings,
tombent comme une tempête de neige.
La tempête de papier s’abat sur les acteurs de cette pièce de théâtre.
Lorsque les confettis dansent, une gaité et une émotion en résultent.

"彩紙紛飛"(2008, 胁阪 克二)
紐約為慶祝勝利舉行彩紙遊行，
缤紛的彩紙暴風雪一般，
從道路兩旁的高樓灑落。
舞台表演中也能見到“紙吹雪”，
紛飛的彩紙是營造舞台氣氛的絕佳道具。

“SOU・SOU京都 平成20年”
SO-SU-Uに色を入れ幾何学模様も入れた。
平面的な感じから奥行きのある感じになった。
白黒一色のが好きな人もいるだろうし、
カラフルなのが好きな人もいる。
デザインは多くの人に受け入れられて成立するもので、
そこが芸術とは違う。

"Colorful prime number pals"（2008,by Katsuji Wakisaka）
I paint the SOU・SOU's standard textile (SO-SU-U) into a colorful pattern,
Add some geometric designs and display it with depth.
Several men, several minds.
Some like black and white patterns, however some like colorful designs.
Design won't be said without popularization.
And that is what I understand the difference between design and art.

Nous avons ajouté des couleurs et une forme géométrique à SO-SU-U.
D’un aspect plat, nous sommes passés à une forme avec profondeur.
Il y a surement des personnes qui aiment le noir et blanc,
tout comme certains préfèrent les motifs très colorés.
Le design a été pensé pour être apprécié par tous,
Tout l’inverse de l’art.

我把「SO-SU-U十數」織紋塗成彩色，
並加入一些幾何圖形。
讓原本平面的花紋變得立體。
有人喜歡黑白配色，也有人喜歡繽紛彩色。
所謂設計，只要被大衆接受，即可成立。
這或許也是設計區別於藝術地方吧。

“シクラメン 平成20年”
ハート形をした 葉の上に
茎を伸ばし みんなで踊るように
花を咲かせるシクラメン
冬の日ざしの少ない沈みがちな季節。
赤やピンク、白などの鮮やかな
シクラメンが気持をあと押ししてくれる。

“朝顔すだれ 平成20年”
朝顔は幼いとき、夏になると身近にいっぱい咲いていた。
よく知っているとそのイメージに
ひきずられてつまらなくなってしまう。
思い切って単純化し、
丸い朝顔を四角っぽくしてみると
かわいくなったと思う。

As a summer memory of my childhood,
Morning glory burst around,
Every year and everywhere.
I simplify those flowers thoroughly,
Illustrating the round faces into square shapes.
That gives morning glory a fresh sense.

Lorsqu’il est jeune, le liseron japonais donne beaucoup de fleurs en été.
Quand vous le savez, cette image reste ancrée en vous.
Si vous le simplifiez intrinsèquement,
En donnant une forme carré à ses fleurs rondes,
Je trouve que cela devient déjà beaucoup plus mignon.

兒時每到夏天附近就開滿了牽牛花。
周而復始也就不覺得新鮮好看了。
我盡可能將牽牛花簡化，
把它圓圓的輪廓故意畫成方形，
記憶中索然無味的朝顏突然變得俏皮可愛起來。

“高瀬 平成20年”
川の瀬の浅い所へ来ると、
底の石や砂が顔を出してサラサラと音を立てる。
四角と縞の模様だが
川が流れている情景が浮かんでくる。

Come to the shallow part of the river,
I saw sandstones on the bottom emerged,

“縞模様 平成20年”
縞を組み合わせただけだが、
あまり見ない不思議な縞模様になった。
模様というのは面白いもので、何でもないものも、
組み合わせや間（ま）の取り方で全く新しいものに生まれ変わる。
考えてみるとこれはいろんなことにあてはまることかもしれない。
人と人も組み合わせ次第とも言える。

I arranged some common stripes into this unique wondering pattern.
This is what interests me when I picture textile designs:
By combining and leaving space,
Nothing becomes something.
All kinds of everything is in the same sense.

Il s’agit simplement d’un ensemble de bandes mais il en résulte
Un motif à rayures étrange, peu vu jusqu’à présent.
Les motifs sont vraiment intéressants, des petites choses de rien du tout.
L’association de combinaisons et d’intervalles donne naissance à de nouvelles choses.
En y réfléchissant bien, cela peut s’appliquer à tout un tas de domaines.
Cela dépend également de l’association entre différents êtres, pourrait-on dire.

這個圖案雖然只是條紋的排列組合，
但卻有一種獨特而不可思議的魅力。
紋樣這種東西非常有趣，

“糺の森 平成20年”
世界遺産となっている下鴨神社。
原生林の鎮守の森。木々がそびえ立っていて、
気持ちのいい空間が広がっている。
細かい市松や格子柄を使って、葉の濃淡や形の
微妙な変化を表現し、豊かで多彩な
森の感じが出せればと思った。

"Tadasu-no-mori"（2008,by Katsuji Wakisaka）
Shimogamo shrine is designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
It is surrounded by the Tadasu-no-mori, a forest contains trees that are up to 600 years old.
This place makes me feel relaxed.
By using these small checkered pattern,
I try to express contrasting density of leaves and subtle changes of the forest.

Le Sanctuaire Shimogamo, patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO.
Une forêt vierge, déité locale. Les arbres s’élèvent majestueusement
Créant un espace agréable et vertueux.
A l’aide de damiers minutieux et de motifs de grilles,
Nous avons retranscrit les changements subtils de teinte des feuilles,
Avec l’espoir de véhiculer les richesses et couleurs de la forêt.

かきつばたとくれば尾形光琳の屏風の絵で決まりだろう。
このデザインは、その光琳の絵をもとに作らせてもらった。
究極の美しさを見てしまうと
僕がジタバタしてもはじまらないと思う。

It recalls the image of Irises screen of Ogata Korin.
This textile design is just based on Korin’s work.
It’s of ultimate beauty that is beyond my grasp.

“ほのぼの 平成20年”
筆にたっぷり絵の具をつけてやわらかい気持ちで四角を描く。
肩の力を抜いて、でも気持ちは集中してゆっくり描く。
ひとつ描いて空間をとって又ひとつ描く。
並んでいる様に描いていても少しずつずれてくる。
ほのぼのしていて面白い。

With a brush imbibed with paint, I delicately drew a square.
Relaxed but concentrated,
I finished it leisurely, leave a space, and drew another one.
These little squares tilted slightly even though I attempt to align them.
Simple and fascinating, with a mild warmth.

Avec un pinceau imbibé de peinture, je dessine délicatement un carré.
Relaxé mais concentré, je dessine sereinement.
Une fois fini, je laisse un espace et en réalise un autre.
Même si j'ai essayé de les aligner, ils sont légèrement excentrés.

According to modern Japanese aesthetics, some of ancient kimono patterns can be deemed bold.
They are daring, far beyond our imagination, showing the active and creative thought.
I long for the old-style and project that into the chrysanthemums and stripes of this textile.

D'après l’esthétique moderne japonaise, certains ancient motifs de Kimono peuvent être considéré comme osé. Ils sont audacieux, plus que de raison, et représente des idées actives et créatives. “送り火 平成20年”
八月十六日の夜、大文字から五山に点火されていく。
祖先の霊が帰っていかれるのを送る火。
火がひとつひとつと灯り、
やがて激しく燃え上がる
大の字が夜空を焦がす。
それが燃え尽きていくのを見ていると、
夏が去っていくのだと思う。

"Okuribi / Ceremonial bonfire in Kyoto"（2008,by Katsuji Wakisaka）
On the evening of August 16,
Ceremonial bonfire are lit on the five mountains side surrounding Kyoto city.
Okuribi is held to see off our ancestors' spirits on the final night of Obon week.
The five fires are lit off one after another, painting the night sky a bright red.
Bonfire of Gozan,
Burn out the darkness, burn out my summertime.

Le soir du 16 Août, des feux sont allumés
Sur les cinq monts entourant la ville de Kyoto.
Okuribi est organisé pour raccompagner les esprits de nos ancêtres vers l'autre monde.
Les cinq feux s'embrasent les uns après les autres Illuminant le ciel nocturne de flammes rouges.
En observant les feux de Daimonji se consumer,
J’ai l’impression de voir l'été se terminer peu à peu.

每年8月16日夜裏，環繞京都的五座山上依次點燃篝火，
爲盂蘭盆節期間歸來的先祖魂靈送行。
這就是京都的大文字五山送火。
明火依次被點燃，愈漸熾烈，灼燒八月的夜空。
我目送它的燃盡，仿佛也看到了夏的臨終。

小さいころ、夏に海へ行ったこと、
スイカをおなかいっぱい食べたこと。
花火も楽しみだった。
ドーンという音とともに、大輪の花を咲かせるのを
我を忘れて見とれていた。
あの夏がなつかしく思い出される。

緑の中に小さく鮮やかな
おおいぬのふぐりの
青い花がびっしり並んでいる。
どういうわけか青空を見ている感じがする。
これを発見すると
春が来たなあとうれしくなる。

Small bright blue flowers,
Called Persian speedwell,
Rising from the green on this mild spring's day.
They grow densely around the countryside,
Make a carpet like the blue of sky.
Wherever they shine I'll be happy to wander,
Remembering the coming of spring in delights.

De petites fleurs bleues éclatantes,
Appelées Véronique de Perse,
Abondent dans la verdure.

Une découverte qui nous réjouit de la venue du printemps.

若いとき、桜は装飾的な感じがして好きな花ではなかった。
しかし年を重ねて京都へ戻ってきて
見る桜はこよなく美しい。
あと何回この花を見られるのだろうか。
桜を見ているこのときが何ものにも
かえがたいものに感じられてくる。

Back in the day when I was young,
I was not very fond of Sakura (cherry blossom) as I considered it an ornamental flower.
However, since my return to Kyoto after so many years, their beauty concerns me.
And I wonder,
Until when can I view them?
They blooming with pink and white perfections,
Giving me happiness, as no other flowers could bring.

"Cerisiers, oh cerisiers!"(2008, par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Dans ma jeunesse, je n'aimais pas les fleurs de cerisiers que je considérais comme décoratives. Toutefois, depuis mon retour à Kyoto, Leur beauté m'interpelle. Jusqu'à quand pourrais-je les admirer? Je comprends à présent le caractère Inestimable de la saison des cerisiers.

"樱复樱"(2008, 胁阪 克二)
年少时看樱，并无欣喜。
放眼望去尽是厚重的装饰感，感受不到它的自然美。
几十年后再回到京都赏樱，
忽而领悟到它的魅力。
年复一年樱复樱。
不知自己还能再赏几载樱。
唯能确信的是，如今赏樱，心境已与年少时不同。
如今它总能唤起我心底的一瞬，
难以取代而不可言喻的怦然。

“菊づくし 平成20年”
僕にとって菊というのはデザインしやすいものだ。
花びらをどれだけでも増やしていけるから、
どんどん描き込んでいって、あとで、
バランスとかリズムをよくしていったのが、菊づくし。
このバランスとリズムというものが
テキスタイルデザインにはとても大事だと思う。

"KIKU ZUKUSHI / Chrysanthemum burst"（2008,by Katsuji Wakisaka）
For me, chrysanthemum is an easy pattern to design with.
To create this " KIKU ZUKUSHI ", or Chrysanthemum burst,
I kept adding petals, while adjusting the balance and rhythm of them.
As far as I'm concerned, the balance and rhythm are important principles of textile design.

"Kiku-zukushi / Bouquet de chrysanthèmes"(2008, par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Pour ma part, le chrysanthème est très facile à modéliser.
Comme il est possible d'ajouter des pétales à l'infini,
on commence à en dessiner, tout en améliorant l'équilibre et l'harmonie de son canevas.
Voilà ce qu'est un bouquet de chrysanthèmes, un kiku-zukushi.
Cet équilibre et cette harmonie sont très importants pour notre design textile.

“結 平成20年”
今年の干支“丑”は、物の結び目を表すようです。
いろんな意味で大変な時代。
だからこそ人と人との関係が問われていると思います。
いい人間関係が結ばれていれば、
どんなことが起こっても幸せではないでしょうか。
“結”は丑の字を中心に
格子模様でしっかりと結んでみました。

Year of the Ox (2008, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
The zodiac sign of this year "丑(Ox)" appears to be an expression of knots.
It is a difficult time in many senses.
That's why interpersonal relationship is being questioned.
If we can develop a good human relationship,
there will be happiness no matter what has happened, won't there?
The "Year of the Ox" pattern is centred around the word "丑(Ox)"
which is tightly tied into a lattice pattern.

Noeuds (2008 par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Le signe du zodiaque chinois de cette année, le bœuf,
semble représenter le “nœud” des événements.
Nous vivons une période difficile à bien des égards.
C'est pourquoi le lien entre les personnes sont remises en question.
Si nous établissons de bonnes relations humaines,
les gens seront heureux quoi qu'il arrive.
Le symbole "Yui" est centré sur le personnage du bœuf.
Je l'ai placé au centre d'un motif en damiers.

今年的生肖「牛(丑)」似乎代表繩子打結之處。
從很多方面來說，這是個艱難的時代，
因而對人與人之間的關係產生了質疑。
然而我相信，如果能建立良好的人際關係，
無論發生什麼，人們都還是會感到幸福。
「結」，是以丑字為中心，創作出緊密連結的格子圖案。

大小の変化と並べ方でリズム感を出してみました。

ああ、なんて素敵なんだろう。
ただただそう思うと、何故か自分が奥様になったように錯覚して嬉しさいっぱいの気持ちになるのです。
昨年はじめてSOU・SOUさんを知り、それ以来脇坂さんのデザインされた手ぬぐい等も日々の生活に取り入れています。
これからも地方のこの場所で、脇坂さんのテキスタイルをSOU・SOUを愉しんでいけたら、と思っています。
