The gentle giants have long trunks and tender eyes.
They walk leisurely, have something of the powerful samurai.

“ぼたんゆり 昭和55年”
昔 チューリップのことを
ぼたんゆりと言っていたそうだ
たしかに ぼたんとゆりの
感じがチューリップにはある。
ぼたんとゆりを大胆にとばして
空間の面白さが出るような
世界を作ってみた。

"Peony lily" is an alternate name for tulip in the old time.
Certainly there are some common characters between tulip and peony or lily.
I drew some peony and lily adventurously to create a spacious and unique space.

Pivoine liliacé est l’ancient utilisée pour la tulipe.

ぷちぷち、ぷちぷち、
梱包用のビニールを指で押して
つぶす。昔は なかった感覚がある。
素材の持つ便利さだけではなく
その時代の空気感が感じられる。

Le bruit du papier d’emballage
plastique que l’on éclate avec son doigt.
J’ai l’impression qu’il n’y en avait pas avant.
Pas seulement pratique par rapport à la longévité
de sa matière, il nous rappelle une époque entière.

用手指逐個捏破氣泡布。

“珊瑚礁 令和元年”
沖縄などの暖かい海にひろがる
珊瑚礁。
青い海の中に思いがけない
色鮮やかな世界が。
珊瑚を中心に 花のような形のもの。
ゆらゆらと ゆれ動いているもの。
その間を 大小さまざまな魚が
泳ぎまわっている。
砂地には エビやカニなど
動きまわっていて
豊かな生命の循環が見られる。

Coral reefs adorn the tropical seas, such as Okinawa area,
providing dazzling colors in the blue ocean.
Coral reef is a circle of life:
flower-shaped coral blooming,
while some branches swaying in the weaves;
fishes swimming through,
while crabs and shrimps enjoy themselves in sandy soil.

Des récifs coralliens colorent le bleu des mers tropiacales,
comme à Okinawa par exemple.
Un récif corallien est un cercle de vie:
des coraux floraux en pleine floraison,
tandis que d’autres tissent leurs branches,
dans lesquelles nagent les poissons,
pendant que les crabes et les crevettes profitent du sol sablonneux.

生長在沖縄等溫暖海域裡的珊瑚礁，
在藍色大海中鋪陳一個繽紛的世界。
我以珊瑚為中心，周圍畫一些花，
再添上一些搖曳的物體。
畫上大大小小的魚，游弋其間；
沙地上加些蝦蟹，來回不停歇。
整張圖演繹著自然中的生命循環。

Herringbone is a very familiar pattern in twilled fabric for suits and jackets.
I drew the herringbone in my own way and created this design.
Classic textile designs with a touch of modern probably will be loved by everyone.

pour les textures de fonds des costumes et vestes.

森の樹の上で
じっとたたずみ 獲物をねらう
ふくろうの姿は
生きる厳しさを感じさせる。
その反面 どこか愛嬌があり
人気がある。
不苦労や福老に通じるので
縁起物でもある。

Owl (2019, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Standing still on the forest tree, waiting for its prey,
Owl shows sublime of life, while cute and charming in apperance.
In Japan, owls bring luck and offer protection from suffering.
The reason can be found in the Japanese name for owl, fu-ku-ro,
which can be written in different sets of characters:
fu for no, kuro for hardship; or fuku for luck, and ro for elderly.

Immobile sur les cimes de la fôret,
attendant patiemment sa proie
le hibou fait force de vitalité et de prestance,
tant aimé chez les Japonais.
Il apporte chance et protection, pouvant être
également interprété phonétiquement par
« Aisance » ou « Chance pour les anciens ».

靜謐佇立在森林某棵樹上
耐心等候獵物出現的貓頭鷹，
讓人感受到生命的威嚴。
與個性相反，它的外觀充滿親和力，招人喜愛。
在日語中，貓頭鷹的發音也可寫作“不苦勞”或“福老”，
寓意祥和，象徵福氣。

“木版 平成2年”
木の板を彫刻刀で彫る。
それに色をぬって和紙に刷る。
色の数だけ 板が必要だが
描いたものと違う味わいが
出て面白い。
今、やる人が少ない木版だが
浮世絵のように
日本が誇る技法のひとつだ。

Carve a wooden board, put color on it and print on washi paper.
Every color needs a single board.
Woodblock printing gives a distinctive feel,
which is very different from drawings.
Even though we are continuing to lose it,
the wood block printing, like the Ukiyo-e,
is still one of the Japanese traditional techniques.

Je grave au ciseau une planche de bois.
J’y appose de la couleur et je l’imprime sur du washi.
La planche est utile seulement pour les couleurs mais
cela donne un rendu intéressant, différent des dessins.
Aujourd’hui, peu de personnes l’utilisent mais
elle fait partie, à l’instar du Ukiyo-e,
des techniques traditionnelles japonaises.

Things happened a very long time ago,
People sometimes appear in your memory,
Those happy days, and even hard times,
The images of these memories are a little vague,
but we can feel their healing presence surrounding us.

“竜田川 平成17年”
昔から和歌に詠まれる紅葉の名所。
流水に紅葉の葉を散らした模様の名でもある。
いにしえの情緒を残しながら
ポップにすることに苦労した。

Tatsuta River (2005,by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Tatsuta Riverin Nara Prefecture is a scenic spot to enjoy the scarlet maple leaves, which can be found in some Waka poems.
「Tatsuta River」 is also known as a pattern of autumn red leaves flowing along the river.
I tried hard to draw the Tatsuta River in a modern way while kepping its nostalgic feeling.

Il s’agit d’un lieu connu pour ses feuilles d’automne,
souvent décrit dans les anciennes poésies waka.
Il s’agit également du nom d’un motif pour décrire
les feuilles rouges d’érables portées par les courants d’eau.
Que de difficultés pour trouver le bon équilibre entre l’essence
historique du motif et un coté pop contemporain.

龍田川，是一條位於奈良縣的河川，
其紅葉美景，被古人詠誦於和歌。
龍田川也是一種傳統紋樣的名稱，
一般描繪著紅葉在落水中飄然而下。
我努力保留其復古韻味，
用現代的風格詮釋龍田川。

Threads twist, strongly tangled together.
People try to disentangle them but
the more we force, the more they get entangled.
Once you give up, and take an objective view,
you may realize the beauty and harmony of this entanglement.

Les fils s’entortillent pour former une véritable tornade.
Une fois dans cet état, il est presque impossible de les démêler.
Plus on force, plus ils s’enchevêtrent.
Une fois qu’on abandonne en se disant que ça ne sert à rien,
on se clame et on s’aperçoit de la beauté de ce chaos jusqu’alors invisible.

絲線一旦有了纏繞之結點，
便很難分開。

“雪持柳に椿 令和元年”
柳の枝に降りつもった雪を
中心に椿を組み合せた
冬の模様。
昔の人がいかに自然と一体となって
暮らしていたかがしのばれる。
日本人が持っている
季節に対する愛着が
こういう模様を生み出して
きたのだろう。

Snow covered weeping willow,
Camellia flower blooms in the middle.
This is a traditional kimono pattern of winter.
It reminds me of the Japanese' keen sense of the season.
People on this island has been learnt to live in harmony with nature long ago,
The pattern shows their sensitivity and imagination.

entre des branches de saules enneigées
et un camélia en son centre.
Il rappelle la vie des anciens qui ne
faisaient qu’un avec la nature.

是傳統和服中表現冬天的意象。

殿方や姫君が登場してくる。
その衣裳や十二単などには
いろんな模様が描かれていて
人物に趣を与えている。
それらの模様を組み合わせて
みたもの

Characters in "The Tale of Genji" are described in illustrated handscrolls, art shikishi boards, folding screens and fans.
Patterns of their splendid costumes increase elegance and tastefulness.
I gathered those textile designs to create my Genji pattern.

Les personnages du Dit du Genji apparaissent
dans des rouleaux peints, des shikishi,
des paravents colorés ou encore des éventails.
Les nombreux motifs dessinés sur leurs splendides
costumes les rendent encore plus élégants.

“ひょうたん 平成20年”
瓜の中の実を出してしまって乾燥させると
ひょうたんが出来る。軽いし水やお酒を入れて栓をして
ペットボトルのように持ち歩いた。
物のない時代、人はいろんなものを
自然の中から作り出していた。今は何でもあるので
工夫して作り出す喜びを失ってしまった。

Gourd Canteen (2008,by Katsuji Wakisaka)
People in old times remove the pulp of the gourds，
dry it to make a light weight containers for liquids.
They often pour water or sake into it and use as an old style pet bottle.
In modern society, we live in an easy profuse way with plentiful supplies all around.
However, it seems that we were robbed of interests and tastes by product
making responding to enabling various natural expressions．

Gourde (2008, par Katsuji Wakisaka)
Il est possible de faire une gourde en
vidant un melon et en faisant sécher sa peau.
Très léger, on peut y mettre de l’eau ou du saké,
ou y mettre un bouchon pour le transporter.
À l’époque où on avait peu de possessions,
les gens fabriquaient des objets à partir de la Nature.
Aujourd’hui, dans une société où tout se trouve,
nous avons perdu la joie de fabriquer des choses à la main.

葫蘆罐 (2008, 脇阪 克二)
把葫蘆果實的內瓤挖空，充分乾燥，製作成葫蘆罐。
它輕巧便携，人們裝入水或酒，叮叮咚咚隨身帶著。
在生活器具并不先進的時代，人從自然中取材，
動手做出各種看似落後，卻頗有趣味的器物。
現代科技越來越發達，物品一應俱全，
人反而喪失了那種創作的快樂。

唐織。

絢爛豪華さにおいて
世界の舞台衣装の中でも
トップクラスといえます。
金糸、銀糸を始め色鮮やかな
糸を使って 草花や文様を
織り出しています。

Gorgeous Kara-ori(2019, by Katsuji Wakisaka)
Kara-ori is a gorgeous costume of the female role in a noh drama.
With a magnificent splendor, Kara-ori is described as
the best grades of stage costume in the world.
It is characterized by grass and flowers pattern
that kintted with brightly colored yarn, such as gold thread and silver thread. .

Le Kara-ori est un magnifique costume pour le rôle des femmes dans le théâtre Nō.
De haute facture, il est décrit comme le plus beau de tous les costumes de théâtre au monde.
Ses caractéristiques sont des motifs de plantes et de fleurs cousus de fils colorés, tel que des fils d’or ou d’argent.
